Faith

"Who Knew" by Pink

You took my hand
You showed me how
You promised me you'd be around
Uh huh
That's right
I took your words
And I believed
In everything
You said to me
Yeah huh
That's right

If someone said three years from now
You'd be long gone
I'd stand up and punch them out
Cause they're all wrong
I know better
cause you said forever
and ever
who knew

Remember when we were such fools
And so convinced and just too cool
Oh no
No no
I wish I could touch you again
I wish I could still call you a friend
I'd give anything

When someone said count your blessings now
For they're long gone
I guess I just didn't know how
I was all wrong
They knew better
Still you said forever
And ever
Who knew

Yeah yeah
I'll keep you locked in my head
Until we meet again
Until we
Until we meet again
And I won't forget you my friend
What happened

If someone said three years from now
You'd be long gone
I'd stand up and punch them out
Cause they're all wrong
That last kiss
I'll cherish
Until we meet again
And time makes
It harder
I wish I could remember
But I keep
Your memory
You visit me in my sleep
My darling
Who knew
My darling
My darling
Who knew
My darling
I miss you
My darling
Who knew
Who knew

How to get A in SPM English

Something that was forwarded to me via email many years ago:

Subject: Metaphors?

Here are some metaphors found in some Australian Form 5 English essays. Try not to laugh too hard. Your sides might hurt pretty bad.;)

Carol NST

* He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

* She grew on him like she was a colony of E. coli and he was room-temperature prime English beef.

* She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.

* Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.

* He was as tall as a six-foot-three-inch tree.

* The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM.

* The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.

* McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.

* From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and "Sex in the City" comes on at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.

* Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.

* The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot oil.

* John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.

* Even in his last years, Grandad had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.

* The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.

* The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.

* He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

* The ballerina rose gracefully en pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.

* He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.

* She walked into my office like a centipede with 98 missing legs.

* It hurt the way your tongue hurts after you accidentally staple it to the wall.

*Sigh* There are things you know you shouldn't do. Things which are impolite, rash and downright mean. Like dishing out nasty comments bout people you hardly know. But sometimes, no matter how good you try to be, the inner bitch rears its ugly head and chomps away at your sense of decency. And when you realise it, it's already too late.

I never really enjoyed back-stabbing or gossiping. Ok la, sometimes I do indulge myself with the occasional gossiping sessions with my close friends. Usually it isn't meant to be hurtful or untrue. Being brought up in a family with high moral standards, I try my best to refrain from dissing people out of spite or boredom. But yesterday, I did something that thoroughly shamed and humbled me.

We had a mini sparring tournament during Karate class yesterday. I was basically doing some judging and referee work along with the other senior belt students. There was this young girl, a green or white belt I think. She's really enthusiastic, attentive seems to enjoy the classes a lot. She even won gold for sparring in her category. However, I found her a little weird. It wasn't her karate skills (she just started learning, so cut her some slack). It was the way she interacted, the way she talked. I dunno la. Her choice of words, the way she cocks her head and hardly looks you straight in the eye, I really dunno. But she was nice and enthusiatic. She came up to me after the match. I congratulated her, gave her some encouragement. Then as she walked away, I turned to my other friend, J who was sitting next to me and said: "You know, that girl just now is a little weird..."

It didn't occur to me that what I did was wrong until after the tournament. By then it was too late to do anything about it. Right after congratulating the girl, and saying how well she did, way to go, keep up the good work, etc. Right after giving her a good pat on the back, I lean over and spout mean remarks to a fellow student. And what makes it worse is that I hardly even know the girl, and I hardly even know J. Bitching to an acquaintance about another acquaintance. Like one of those bitchy moments from America's Next Top Model. How about that.

I guess I could relate to that junior belt girl's situation. As far as I could remember, there were always people who thought I was weird. Once, during a primary school trip to Taman Negara, I overheard a bunch of my 'friends' backstabbing me, calling me stupid and weird and I forgot what else. My social skills leaves much to be desired. Most of the time I'm an introvert and yes, in a way, I am weird. Maybe I deserved all the backstabbing I got. But that girl certainly didn't. She deserved better treatment from someone who had been in her shoes, once upon a time.

Hopefully J forgets what I said that day. Hopefully I'll learn to keep undue comments to myself.

RIP Crocodile Hunter

Stephen Robert Irwin (22 February 1962 - 4 September 2006): Australian naturalist, wildlife expert and TV star. The world mourns your passing.

Of all things, a stingray barb. I thought he would get eaten by crocodiles or something.

Perhentian Part 5 of 5: The last day

Erm, it looks a little small from here, but I'm holding a star fruit. I've always been fascinated with fruit trees. :P

Potong stim only.

A little tired, but still trying to smile...

Finally, some group pics!

And this, is our little experiment with mentos and a bottle of root beer! Wasted a lot of mentos 'cos we couldn't get them in fast enough, so the 'fountain' didn't go up as high as it could have. Still, it was a spectacular sight. In the original mentos experiment the eruption was recorded at 18 feet! Heh... should have brought along a test tube so that we could drop all the mentos in one shot. You can view a video of a mentos-coke fountain here: http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/00000109 Maybe one day I'll post up our own video on this blog.

Cast and crew of the series "Lost in Perhentian". In this episode, Meng Lee leaves the chalet key in the chalet, thus locking everyone out. They have 15 minutes to bathe and pack before the boat leaves for the mainland. Will they make it in time? Who will have to sacrifice his or her bathing rights? Stay tuned to find out...

Here we have some cam-whores taking photos while waiting their turn to use the shower...

Barf Buddies for life.

Dinner at Kuala Besut Jetty. For RM4, you can get yourselves one of these insanely huge fruit shakes. This one is an orange shake. I had mango, which tasted absolutely heavenly. No where in Subang will you ever find something like this for RM4. After dinner, it was time for another grueling 8-hour bus ride back to KL.

Perhentian Part 4 of 5: A simple day on the beach

Just chilling out on the beach. :)

Sunbathing?

And some volleyball. Don't let their size fool you, these Ang Mohs are really good at the game. Unlike yours truly, who only stood there day-dreaming.

Monitor lizards were everywhere.

Saw this spider in some bushes. It was so huge! Compare its size to the size of the palm leaves...

We took a night boat to Long Beach at Pulau Perhentian Kecil. The journey there was scary yet exhilarating! Basically it was a private arrangement between us and this boatman, so there were no life jackets. Just a little sampan of a motor boat and a torchlight. Everything was so dark. The only thing I remembered was the chill of night air and seawater, the beautiful starry sky, and the dark menacing look of the sea...

A little boy twirling a flaming baton on the beach. He was part of some beach performance.

A bonfire on the beach. It's pretty, no doubt. But the whole time it was burning, ambers and ashes kept flying onto our table. The night we went there, there was a beach party organised by the resort (forgot what's the name). We did some dancing and while doing so attracted some erm, company... Shiau wei attracted a guy, Calvin ALSO attracted a guy, and I... attracted the resident bapuk. -_-"

Perhentian Part 3 of 5: Snorkelling

Argh..... There was supposed to be more pictures in this entry, but dunno why Blogger is unable to display them. Wanted to put up more turtle pics! Day 2: Snorkelling Trip around the island. Prior to snorkelling, I committed 2 fatal errors:

1. Eating a hearty breakfast. The bacon was good, so I kept getting more.

2. Not bringing anti-emetic pills along. Thought some good old assam would do the trick.

So.....

The first place we visited was called Shark Point. Supposed to have sharks. But the only people who saw a shark were Calvin and Vee Han, 'cos they jumped into the water first. As usual, the water was really clear and nice there, filled with a myriad of corals and fishes. It was all fun at first, but as time passed, the rolling waves started to take a toll on my delicate stomach. -_-" At the end of the session at Shark Point, I felt so nauseous. And to make matters worse, my large bowels decided to go into action as well...

Andrew was also another one: *swim swim swim* *look at fishes* Then suddenly, *vomit drools out from the corner of his mouth, like air liur meleleh*

Xian-Nian: "Eyerr!" *quickly paddles away as the vomit floats towards him*

Fishes: "Yum!" *Immediately attack the vomit*

At least Andrew managed to stir up a feeding frenzy, so that everyone could get a good look of the fishes. :P I just dirtied the boat. Pity the boatman...

I had to ask the boatman to send Andrew and I back to the resort. Luckily he managed to flag down another boat, so that the rest wouldn't miss out on the other snorkelling spots. Good this they didn't. 'Cos at Turtle Point, they actually saw TURTLES!!!!! TURTLESSS!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 of them somemore! And they were feeding on algae on the sea floor! *sob* And I missed it! Cumbersome creatures as they are on land, they were so graceful in the water! (according to the rest) It's a good thing there was a underwater photographer cum resort guide with us (Valentina, a nice Ang Moh Lady). She took some pictures of us snorkelling and compiled it into a CD for us. No, it's not free. Had to pay RM150 per CD. Thank God for CD burners. Now each of us have our own copy.

Xian-Nian's first snorkelling trip.

Ching Ee!

People say I look like "Lady in the Water" in this pic.

L-R: Vee Han, me, Meng Lee, Shiau Wei, Calvin.

And last but not least, one of the beautiful turtles! If I'm not mistaken, it's a Hawksbill Turtle...

Perhentian Part 2 of 5: ANTM/Cam-whoring Session

This section is dedicated to the cam-whores of Perhentian. Many thanks to Meng Lee, our chief photographer for all our annual trips.

Perhentian Part 1 of 5

The long-awaited trip has come and gone. But before I start with my overstuffed photoblog, a brief summary my holidays so far:

Passed EOS 5 (A little too late to announce that actually. Results came out last month). Convocation is this Saturday. Don't feel like I deserve a convocation lor, considering that my knowledge can hardly fill "half a bucket" (direct translation from Cantonese).

Piano exam is tomorrow. I suffer from "The Curse of the Threesomes". If I fail something once, I'm bound to fail it again. Hence being forced to make a third attempt. It's not that I can't, it's just that I panic. Oh please lemme pass....

Have been contemplating on many things, had half a mind to post some here. But then again, I'm not very good with words especially when it comes to deeper issues. And also, I might just get flamed like crazy. So let's stick to the lighter side of life. :)

My time spent at home for that past month or so has been effectively inefficient. Lecture notes are still lying on the floor in piles. And my so-called plan to learn how to cook and sew (properly) from Mommy has been met with procrastination.

Erm, that's about it.

As per tradition, we (i.e. Andrew, Vee Han, Calvin, Meng Lee, Ching Ee, Shiau Wei, (minus Seng Kiat. AGAIN), me plus Xian-Nian) went on our yearly trip. This time, it was Pulau Perhentian in Terrenganu from the 10th-14th of August. Technically it was a 3-day 2-night stay at Perhentian Island Resort. But due to the horrendous 8-hour bus ride (Horrendous 'cos I hardly got any sleep) and waiting around for the boat to the island, the trip lasted a little over 4 days... As usual, I prefer to let the pictures do the talking. But we took so many photos, I can't decide which to leave out. So I'll do what Christine does: Post a photoblog in parts. :P

The 'interesting' signboard we found at the Kuala Besut Jetty. Apparently offences such as "lelaki berlagak seperti perempuan" are of higher priority than other things... There was another signboard too. Saw it on the way back home. "JAUHI PERBUATAN MAKSIAT" in huge bold letters, followed by a long list of hotlines which you can dial when you witness said crime. It prompts me to wonder, could the time, energy and resources be spent to address more pressing issues?

Lovely sunrise at Kuala Besut Jetty.

Ching Ee, Shiau Wei and me.

On the way to the resort at Pulau Perhentian Besar.

View of the Perhentian Island Resort Jetty.

Eee so cute! :P:P:P

Baby turtle in a bucket!

Tired and worn-out, but finally at the beach!

The sand on the beach is so fine and soft, dipping your feet into it felt so heavenly! Most of the people on the beach were Ang Mohs, we were like one of the few Malaysians there. These Ang Mohs really worship the sun. They can spend the whole afternoon just lying there tanning themselves under the scorching hot sun. I stayed in the shade most of the time, and even then I returned to the chalet dizzy and dehydrated.

Remnants from Langkawi: Ms Moist and His Magnificence Lord Skank.

An equally magnificent sunset to end our first day there. :)

The cockroach I found in our Gross-As-Hell toilet. It was then caught and duly drowned in our Gross-As-Hell toilet bowl.
